A helmet for Beowulf – NP Aerospace inspires creative schools’ project

The epic Anglo-Saxon poem, Beowulf, has inspired artists for centuries, including the composer Toby Young who was commissioned by Armonico Consort to write a musical work for children in 2017.

And in the lead up to a performance of the work at Warwick Hall, Warwick School on 15 July 2025, children from four Coventry and Warwickshire primary schools had the opportunity to look at the story in fascinating detail.  In a partnership project with world-leading armour manufacturer NP Aerospace, they delved into aspects of storytelling, science, engineering and the arts, through a series of immersive workshops.

In the saga, Beowulf, having slain the monstrous Grendel and his mother early in his career, has to fight off a terrorising dragon many years later and loses his own life in the process.

The children began by acting out the story, then proceeded to look at Anglo-Saxon armour and consider why Beowulf might have chosen to face the dragon without it.  Using historical references and their own imagination, they began designing their own helmets, considering materials, colours and symbolism.

Two schools then had a unique, behind-the-scenes visit to NP Aerospace in Coventry.  Touring the  factory, they saw how modern protective helmets are made and quizzed engineers about each stage of the production process.  They tested different substances under pressure and impact to discover which materials make the best armour.  And they thought about the parts of the human body that needed the most protection, examining real armour and helmet components, including pieces tested for ballistic protection.

Back in school, they brought their designs to life, transforming  their 2D sketches into 3D wearable helmets, before the project culminated in the large-scale concert, performed alongside Armonico Consort with former Royal harpist Alis Huws, narrator Oz Clarke, and director Christopher Monks.

“Without doubt, the highlight of the project was the unique chance to visit NP Aerospace’s factory, where children saw first-hand how real-life protective equipment is designed, tested, and built—bringing their learning to life in an inspiring and meaningful way. Armonico Consort offer our sincere thanks to Peter Hardisty and NP Aerospace for their generous funding and support of the creative workshop project. Their involvement gave pupils an unforgettable opportunity to receive expert coaching and explore the fascinating world of body armour protection.”  Nathan Cole, Director of Operations and Outreach, Armonico Consort
